I’m always happy to find another fan of this record! It’s criminally underrated and like you I’ve never understood why (even though I know most of the reasons).
This also happens to be one of those records where I remember exactly where I was when I picked it up. My mom, grandma and I were at K-Mart. My dad had passed away a few months earlier and this was in that weird time space where everything is still upside down, but you also have to get stuff for the garden, yaknow? So my mom decided that buying me something would probably be a good idea. Mostly, I think she just wanted me to feel better? I dunno, I never asked. At any rate, I walked out of there with a scooter and BOTS on cassette. And a few bags of topsoil.
It’s a beautiful record, and you’ve really done it justice here. I’d never known the backstory behind the song. Wherever she is, I hope the taco vendor is having the time of her life.
Hi, Kevin. I really appreciate you sharing your memories about this song. I think that it passes right by a lot of people, but it resonates deeply with folks for whom it lands because of memories or experience.
I feel like the B-52s are a group that many think about because of the lyrics and the vocals, but that folks take the musical part for granted as being minimal or new wave background noise when there's a lot going on there sometimes.
